The flutes produced by the Haynes and Powell companies in past decades have gained the reputation of "vintage." These flutes are characterized by darker, more colorful tone qualities. Despite the challenges of pre-Cooper scales and embouchure plates, these flutes are prized and sought after by orchestral, chamber and jazz flutists worldwide. Vintage Powells in particular are so sought after that they qualify as long-term financial investments.  Flutes that sold for hundreds of dollars in 1950 now sell for over $10,000.
